Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has suspended his Senior Special Assistant on Print Media, Mr. Wale Ajetunmobi, following a controversial post on his personal X (formerly Twitter) account.
The announcement was made on Tuesday in a statement by Gboyega Akosile, the governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity. The statement clarified that Ajetunmobi’s suspension was due to the misrepresentation of facts surrounding a past incident.
Ajetunmobi had tweeted that individuals allegedly responsible for the arson at Television Continental (TVC) during the 2020 #EndSARS protests were “hunted down and executed.” He later explained that his use of the word “executed” was erroneous and claimed that the statement was taken out of context.
Governor Sanwo-Olu’s administration emphasized its zero tolerance for extra-judicial actions, reiterating that such practices are against its principles.
The suspension follows widespread public scrutiny after Ajetunmobi’s tweet, which included an anecdote about a young boy accused of carrying an AK-47 and being involved in the arson. The post sparked debates on social media, with many questioning the implication of extra-judicial killings.
Ajetunmobi has since deleted the controversial tweet and issued a clarification, asserting that his statement was a personal opinion and did not represent the official stance of the Lagos State government.
The 2020 arson at TVC left over 500 staff members displaced, with significant damage to equipment and facilities. Governor Sanwo-Olu previously visited the station to assess the aftermath and express solidarity with its management and staff.
