BENIN CITY – Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has spent his first 14 days in office implementing a series of strategic measures aimed at addressing pressing issues and endearing himself to the people of the state.
Governor Okpebholo’s administration follows the tenure of Godwin Obaseki, whose eight years in office were marked by significant institutional reforms and infrastructure projects, yet overshadowed by criticisms of elitist policies, dilapidating infrastructure, and strained relations with the Oba of Benin. The new governor has inherited challenges including deteriorating roads, failing schools, and escalating living costs.
In response, Okpebholo has taken decisive steps, starting with the suspension of market unions accused of price-fixing and exploitation, a move welcomed by residents grappling with high food prices. He emphasized that the state government would no longer tolerate extortion and has directed security agencies to act against any violators of the suspension order.
Infrastructure development is also a priority, with the governor flagging off the construction of a flyover at Ramat Park, Benin City. He has announced plans for two additional flyovers to address the city’s growing traffic congestion, aiming to modernize the capital and ease commuter challenges.
In the education sector, Okpebholo has dissolved the governing councils of all state-owned tertiary institutions, citing the need for systemic reforms. Additionally, the management teams of Edo Specialist Hospital and Stella Obasanjo Hospital have been disengaged, signaling a commitment to overhauling critical public services.
The governor has declared war on cultism following a spate of killings linked to rival groups, directing security agencies to take decisive action to restore safety. He has also suspended unauthorized revenue collection, targeting illegal levies imposed by individuals and groups operating outside government authorization.
Public expectations remain high, with residents calling for immediate attention to roads, schools, and security. Critics, however, have noted challenges in sustaining the momentum and delivering on the promises made.
