In a significant move towards modernization, the Nigerian Railways is set to initiate its e-ticketing system starting this Wednesday, according to Mr. Said Alkali, the Minister of Transportation. The announcement was made during the launch ceremony of the e-ticketing service for the Lagos-Ibadan and Itakpe-Warri routes in Abuja on Monday.
Minister Alkali emphasized that the implementation of the e-ticketing system aims to streamline ticket sales revenue directly into the government’s funds. This technological advancement not only promises financial transparency but also drastically reduces the potential for corruption and revenue leakage. Alkali highlighted that the new system would enhance passenger security and eliminate unauthorized ticket sales, benefitting Nigerian citizens.
Dr. Magdalene Ajani, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, commended the Federal Government’s dedicated efforts to bring the e-ticketing platform to fruition. She explained that the electronic ticketing initiative for the standard gauge railways would effectively combat racketeering, safeguarding the economy from negative impacts.
Mr. Fidet Okhiria, the Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), expressed optimism about the system’s potential to enhance the integrity of operations within the sector. He stated that the introduction of the e-ticketing platform would not only ensure operational efficiency but also significantly boost the revenue generation for the Federal Government.
In an effort to efficiently operate the system, the Federal Government has awarded concessions for the Warri-Itakpe and Lagos-Ibadan routes to private firms, “Ticketing Solutions Limited” and “Global Software and Digital Solution,” respectively, for a period of ten years. These firms have committed to fulfilling their mandates effectively, promising a seamless and efficient experience for passengers.
