The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has launched the VIGISCOPE (VGS) application, a digital platform aimed at enhancing emergency reporting and response capabilities for schools across Nigeria. The unveiling took place on November 27, 2024, at the conclusion of a two-day seminar to inaugurate the Safe School Protection Squad in Ogun State.
Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, explained that the app is a cutting-edge alert system linked to a central command base in Abuja. It allows schools to report emergencies and request assistance in real time.
“This app enhances technical intelligence in crime resolution and ensures swift responses to emergencies, even in hard-to-reach areas. Students and school principals can use their smartphones to send distress signals and request immediate assistance,” Odutola said.
The app’s features include real-time alerts that allow users to send “rescue me” messages to a central hub, prompting a quick tactical response. It is internet-enabled, making it accessible wherever internet service is available. The system also supports law enforcement in accessing difficult terrains without casualties and improves crime resolution through data-driven insights. Users can directly communicate with tactical commanders for immediate intervention.
The VGS app is part of broader efforts to protect schools amid rising concerns over insecurity. It is designed to support the Safe School Initiative by empowering schools with technology-driven safety measures. Odutola encouraged schools to adopt the app, emphasizing its potential to ensure swift rescue operations during emergencies.
The app’s introduction aligns with the IGP’s commitment to leveraging technology for enhanced security across Nigeria’s educational institutions.
