Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) technology has gained attention in Nigeria as an alternative to increasingly expensive petrol. However, despite its benefits, safety concerns, especially following explosions in Benin and other incidents, have raised doubts among Nigerians about fully embracing the technology. The Federal Government has been encouraging citizens to adopt CNG, yet the fear surrounding its safety has slowed the pace of conversion.

CNG offers numerous advantages, including significant cost savings, extended engine life, and reduced environmental impact. Studies suggest that CNG can lower carbon dioxide emissions by 20 to 30 percent, reduce particulate matter by 90 percent, and decrease nitrogen oxide emissions by 50 percent. Additionally, CNG can be up to 250 percent cheaper than petrol and diesel in Nigeria. It also contributes to energy security and reduces dependence on imported fossil fuels.

Countries like India and Pakistan have successfully adopted CNG technology, with millions of vehicles converted to use it. If Nigeria can overcome its safety concerns, there is potential for similar success, particularly with the country’s abundant natural gas resources.

However, several challenges remain, including the high initial cost of conversion—up to N1.7 million per vehicle—and the limited number of CNG refueling stations across the country.

Before converting to CNG, consider the following seven key points:

  1. Qualified Technicians: The conversion must be done by a well-trained technician with expertise in CNG technology.
  2. Vehicle Compatibility: The vehicle must be compatible with CNG kits, ensuring that the correct parts are used.
  3. CNG Tank Size and Vehicle Space: The CNG tank must be suitable for the vehicle’s size, and the installation should not compromise luggage space.
  4. Modification of Fuel Systems: Fuel systems, including injectors, fuel lines, and regulators, may need to be modified for optimal CNG performance.
  5. Tank Quality: Only specially designed CNG tanks should be used. Cooking gas cylinders are not suitable due to the high pressure required.
  6. Vehicle Durability: The vehicle must be capable of carrying the additional weight of the CNG tank, which is heavier than a typical cooking gas tank.
  7. Vehicle Condition: The vehicle should be inspected for rust and other issues before conversion to ensure it is fit for CNG use.

Despite these challenges, CNG technology holds promise for reducing fuel costs and benefiting the environment, provided safety and technical considerations are carefully addressed.
